VT is a rhythm disturbance that originates from the lower chambers of the heart

This rhythm disturbance is usually caused by some underlying heart disease such as previous heart attacks, heart failure or inherited heart conditions although it can occur in structurally normal hearts.

In normal hearts, VT carries a normal prognosis and the treatment is with either drugs or ablation.

In patients with underlying heart disease, VT is more likely to cause dizziness or blackouts and may be more dangerous.

In these patients the treatment of VT usually involves tablets, defibrillating pacemakers or ablation and often a combination of these.
